It’s the last day of the World Kiteboarding League event in Cabarete and the men’s finals. The big crowd gathered on the beach goes wild as Luis Alberto Cruz lands a massive Hinterberger Mobe 7 and takes the top spot on the podium over Liam Whaley and Carlos Mario.
This win was without doubt a big achievement for Luis and a significant moment for Star and Cabarete’s kite community. We were there from the beginning, providing Luis with gear to help him progress and discover his potential as a professional kite surfer. Seeing him outplay the top kitesurfers in the world and enter the world stage of freestyle kiting made this Sunday a day that we will not soon forget.
We’re a family.
Star is represented by a group of enthusiastic riders that love the brand and what we stand for; distributing kites on a smaller scale and offering a better price for the same high-quality gear.
Even though we take good care of our riders, our pockets aren’t always deep enough to keep other kite brands away. This was unfortunately the case after Luis’s big win in 2016, as he found himself in a difficult situation when approached by another brand. This is what he has to say;
“I am grateful for the support that Star has given me for the past 7 years and I regret leaving their team”
In the end of the day, we won’t let one mistake ruin what has been a wonderful partnership for many years. We are therefore happy to announce that Luis is back where he belongs, riding with Star and will again be seen shredding on a Sirius!
First stop on his international tour will be the Kite Clash, Canadas biggest kite competition held at the Squamish Spit (July 6-8). The rest of the line-up depends on what’s happening with the WKL and GKA. Turkey is on the list and we’re hopeful that Luis will again take the top of the podium when the WKL visits Brazil in the end of November.
The Dominican Dream Team
The good news doesn’t end there, in addition to Luis’s comeback, Joselito Del Rosario and Samuela Mulè is also back with Star and will be showing off on kitebeach in Cabarete. Our new pro team will be busy this summer with competitions lined up, starting with D.R. Open in Las Terrenas (June 28), followed by Susi Mai kite fest in Cabarete (July 9-15). Luis is one of the few riders in the world that can land triple handle-passes and this year he will again show this unique move off Cabarete’s big kickers! Our Dominican Pro team will also be featured in a new video that is coming out in July, at the same time as the 2019 Taïna’s are shipped around the world.
